Businesses more than ever, have embraced the use of digital communication as a channel to get across to their customers. To stay afloat businesses are becoming innovative, co-branding, and reiterating their online existence by gaining trust and establishing a solid reputation.

Even as e-commerce business blossoms, there are certain areas that should not be undermined by those involved, they are vital for smooth online business, as they aid against cyber invasions.

An online business owner should secure his domain name against cyber squatters and should not cyber squat as it is a criminal offense. Domain names can be trademarked to bolster the legal claim on the holder.  Online business platforms should be certified for data security, as this will ensure compliance with global best practices, also links between networked computers must be authenticated and encrypted.

Online business owners should further ensure that they apply the required standard for payment account data security, as credit card information is delivered to them among other necessary protection that should be given to these data received and stored by them. Most importantly, customers must be safeguarded from phishing. E-commerce companies are to provide helpful information to their customers and grant them easy access to support channels.

In Nigeria, various regulations have been enacted to ensure that data protection is enforced and that contractual relationships arising out of e-commerce are enforceable.
