It was an all interactive and intellectual programme on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 at the Lagos Court of Arbitration (LCA), Lekki, as legal practitioners and in-house counsel from private organisations came together to acquire relevant knowledge on the path to achieving a flawless drafting and innocuous writing and also to understand the basic concept and skills required for proper legal writing.; at the seminar organized by the Commercial Law Development Services (CLDS), on “ Legal Writing & Drafting Skills”.

Intellectuals like Mr Adetola Adeleke, Lead Partner, Crown Court Attorneys, Dr Eberechi Ifeonu, Senior Associate, Kenna Partners and Mr Okechukwu Ekweanya, Senior Associate, Kenna Partners with experience on active litigation, corporate and commercial practice were present at the programme as speakers. There were two breakout sessions where participants were divided into three groups and case studies presented to them to attempt in groups. At the end of the breakout sessions, each group had a representative to present their findings after which the facilitator provided guidance in reviewing the task done.

Mr Adetola Adeleke highlighted the tips for an effective and well written legal document as follows: Simplicity & Clarity, Coherence & Cohesion, Length of Pararaph, Consistent formatting and Appropriate Vocabulary amongst other things. The facilitators also shed more lights on tools for legal drafting. They include: Language, Precedents on Legal Drafting, Power of Presentation, Variety and Humour.

The seminar on Legal Drafting & Writing Skills is the last seminar for 2017. A programme calendar for 2018 will be developed and shared on our website.
